The chapter titles are "Conditions in Germany which led to emigration","Penn's visit to Germany", "Germantown", "The Labadists in Maryland", "The Women in the Wilderness", "German Valley, New Jersey", "Kocherthal's colony", "The Great Exodus of the Palatines", "Pequae and the Mennonites", and twelve others.I found the book helpful in understanding the conditions that led up to the exodus of so many Germany in the mid 1700's, and in catching the flavor of some of the early Pennsylvania Dutch communities. It has a good surname index, which was a plus for me.

I had a very difficult time getting thru this book, and actually ended up skim-reading large portions. The beginning was pretty good as it described conditions in Europe that encouraged German migration to the colonies. And the last portion of the book describing the German participation in the Revolution was also interesting. But large portions of the middle of the book were basically just histories of the various German religious sects, who led them, what they believed in and what happened to them. I personally found that to be boring, thus the skim-reading. I do agree with the first reviewer, tho; the index of names is quite thorough.
